Recently I’ve been browsing the internet to see what people are saying about blogging specifically those who want to learn how to start a blog. It seems like a lot of people have issues with starting up blogs, which is completely understandable, I mean if you’ve never set up your own before and have no idea where to start how would you make a Blog. Today, I would like to answer some of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to blogging.

Warning this is a lengthy article, but it is the most comprehensive guide on everything that has to do with blogging and BEYOND, so I recommend reading it in its entirety as I have added a lot of tips to success throughout.

How to Start a Blog 101

Should I Start a Blog?

The number one question that I see people ask is should I start a blog? The answer lies within, if you have a passion that you would like to share and possibly make money from, then yes blogging is for you. But if you were looking just to make money and this topic is not your passion, then I would not recommend blogging. The reason being blogging is a lot of hard work, writing about the same thing day in and day out can become tedious. If you show no real interest in a topic then what makes you think other people would want to read your work? Being passionate about something you blog about makes it so much easier to connect with your audience and it shows. If you think you have your passion and you would like to share it with the world then go for it, I think you should start a blog. just get ready to grind down and put out some amazing content.

What do I write about?

Choosing to blog about can be tough, but it’s simpler than you think. Start with what you are passionate about, the topic that you choose is called your niche. When you pinpoint your niche you want to know what to write about, and this part is easy. Head over to Google and type in your niche. For this example, we are going to use CrossFit. With a simple search we get the following results:

Once you type in your keyword you’ll see search predictions. These are things that people are looking for, which would be great topics to write about.

Once we search for the term, “CrossFit” at the top of the search engine result page (SERP), you will see, “People also ask”.

These are questions that people are asking. If you compile all these questions into one post and answer them thoroughly, that would be a great post.

How Do I Start a Blog?

When it comes to starting a blog, many people do not know the basics but I am here to reassure you that starting a blog is easier than ever. When I first started web design over 10 years ago, creating a Blog was not so easy, but with the wide variety of tools available today setting up a website and blog can be accomplished within a matter of minutes. To create your blog you must first decide where are you going to post your content. Are you planning on being a serious blogger with your own website or do you want to be an amateur that blogs on a community site? If you are serious about blogging I recommend setting up your website from which to blog. But if you want to blog on a community site such as WordPress.com that’s okay too. Before you head over to there site and sign up, I want to show you exactly what starting your self hosted blog has to offer.

What do I use to Start a Blog?

When I see the question “what do I use to start a blog?” the answer is always the same, WordPress. WordPress is an open-source software which means it has been built by a group of people as a collective instead of a single entity. When I say WordPress I mean the software, not WordPress.com. The WordPress software is hosted on your website, not theirs. This software is free which is great for those looking to start a blog for cheap. WordPress is extremely flexible and has a multitude of uses. You can use WordPress not only to start a blog, but you can also create an online course and eCommerce store, but more on that later.

What are the basic steps to start a blog?

The basic steps to starting a blog are as follows:

1. Start planning the name of your blog. This should be unique as you will purchase a domain name based upon that name. If you need assistance with that be sure to read how to select domain for blog.

2. Next, you want to ensure that your blog will load fast, that is why you want to pick fast web hosting. Nothing drives people away from your site other than bad content and a slow website.

3. The final step is to set up your domain and hosting, then install WordPress.

How much is a blog domain?

Domains are relatively inexpensive when you compare it to other services such as Wicks. They charge a monthly premium that is the same price as a yearly domain. Domains such as .COM or .ORG generally starts at $12. If you choose a domain with extremely good key words sometimes services like GoDaddy will charge you more because they are considered “premium domains”. This is why choosing a domain name that is unique is important. Sometimes hosting providers will even offer a free domain for the first year as long as you pay for a year worth of Hosting.

How much is blog hosting?

Blog hosting is very affordable, prices can be as low as $3 per month. That range can fluctuate up to $20 per month depending on your requirements. Starting with a new blog I wouldn’t pay more than $10 a month.

How to Start a Blog: Content

How often do professional bloggers write in their blog?

When it comes to professional bloggers we tend to post almost every single day if not multiple times a day Monday through Friday and sometimes on the weekends. Yes, I know that seems like a lot of work but the rewards for that outweigh the work being done. If you enjoy what you’re doing and you will never work a day in your life. Some blogs that are just starting up post several times a week which is okay too. On BuildDesign.org, I try to post as much as my schedule permits. Sometimes I will post every single day, while other times I will post a few times a week. Focusing on quality versus quantity is the rule of thumb. Quality content is the most important aspect of your blog. Like I mentioned in the above, if you don’t have quality content then your readers will know and you will not be seen as an authority in your niche. I would rather put out only a few articles a week that are quality than many subpar articles.

How do I write a blog faster?

When it comes to how fast you can write a blog it comes down to how familiar you are with the topic. If you are well rounded in your niche, then writing about it should be a piece of cake. Think about it as having a conversation. If you really enjoy something then you can talk about it for hours, blogging is like a one-way conversation. That’s why I said you must be passionate about your niche. You will have a tougher time creating new if you don’t love it. On average I would say it takes about an hour to write a thorough 300 to 500-word blog post. Of course, if you aren’t a fast typer, then this process may take longer. Luckily for you, I’ve come up with a surefire way to overcome typing lag.

I have reworked this writing hack to help you produce more content while the topic is fresh on your mind. I found that when I am typing I sometimes lose motivation and ideas while I am trying to hash out the content. Are you ready for this? Speech-to-text… By speaking into a microphone you can easily create new content for your blog FAST. Like I said it’s just like having a conversation and once you get the hang of it you could be creating 2000 word articles in an hour easily.

To create an article using Speech-to-Text there are some free resources out there so don’t even think about buying expensive software. I love saving money and I’m sure you do too.

If you have a free Gmail, you will have access to Google Docs. Google Docs has a voice-to-text feature that you can use for free to transcribe your voice into text. Guess what? I’m this method to write this article at this very moment. Pretty cool huh? Now you can write articles fast without losing your train of thought. Just make sure to revise your text afterward to make sure it makes sense.

Here’s how to get started using voice-to-text for blogging.

Start by creating your free Gmail account. Log in and go to the grid of dots right next to your account icon. Towards the bottom, you will see the ‘Docs’ icon, click this.

How to Voice to text blog

From the Doc application, you want to create a blank document.

Create a Blank Document

In on the new document page, go to Tools > Voice typing. NOTE: This will only work if you have your microphone connected to your computer.

Alternatively, if you don’t have a microphone you can always use the notes application on your smartphone and dictate text using voice feature.

What do I do if I have writer’s block?

Writer’s block can be one of the biggest things to overcome. Some of the methods that I have used to overcome writer’s block is to work on something different. By walking away from the problem and taking it completely out of the equation you give your mind the breath of fresh air that it needs. Sometimes when you are too focused on something it becomes problematic that’s why stepping away and doing something else will give you a much-needed break. You never know, sometimes when you are doing something else a random that spark of motivation will come to you. This has been my key to success for years.

Another method that I use is by not focusing at the beginning of the article but rather moving to the middle. When writing an article or blog post you should have a structure of what you’re going to write. Using the topic CrossFit I will should you what I mean.

Using the research we did earlier in the article we came up with the following topics:

Each of the questions from Google I will use as titles for each section of my blog post. I will typically only focus on one question at a time while the topic is fresh on my mind.

Ideas for Blogging

I added some notes to the structure of my blog post so I can get a better idea of what is going to be inside of each section. The structure of a blog post should be as follows.

Correct Blog Structure

I have my intro, the questions, and the summary. By focusing on the questions first your brain should spark ideas.

Once you get back into the rhythm of writing you should keep yourself motivated because you are productive and that is when you will see the most results.

Do not worry about not having ideas to write about it happens to the best of us and sometimes motivation comes at the most unexpected time.

How to write a blog more efficiently?

To write a blog more efficiently, you need to stay organized. By determining what you’re going to write over a 30-day period can keep you on task and give you realistic deadlines as to when they need to be completed. I know one month seems like a long time to plan but when it comes to blogging these are the mandatory steps that you need to take.

Putting yourself on a schedule will not only change your mindset but make you more efficient when it comes to writing. That is why it is important to create what we call a Content Calendar. A Content Calendar is a breakdown of the different topics you would like to write about, and each topic is assigned to a day. By writing out a Content Calendar you will, in turn, give yourself more ideas for other content that you can develop in the future. Writing a list of potential ideas or keywords will help when you find yourself with no ideas to write about.

How do I pay someone to blog for me?

If you are interested in making money blogging but you don’t want to labor consistently write content you can always pay a professional to blog for you. I know it sounds crazy, right? But there are content writers out there from all price ranges that are willing to work 24/7 to make sure you have content. One of the sites that I have used for years is called UpWork. UpWork is a freelance website that allows Freelancers to bid on jobs that you offer. Skill levels range from entry-level to expert and you pay accordingly. Just know that you will still have a part in this process as to what content you want them to write. So just do your research and send it to your writer.

How much does blog content cost?

When it comes to paying for blog content you must know you get what you pay for. It is possible to get a thousand-word article for $8, but most likely the content will need to be heavily revised if it is usable at all. The typical price for a Blog post is anywhere from $20 to $50 and up. Of course, this depends on the word count and the skill level of the content writer. The higher the word count the more expensive the content is. When picking a content writer there are a few things you should be looking for. First, have them submit writing samples or a cover letter, that way you know they will be a fit for your project. Second, this writer needs to have the following skillset:

  • Clear and concise sentences
  • Free of a grammatical and punctuation errors
  • Good communication (you want to be able to communicate with your writer just in case you need revisions or have questions)
  • SEO know-how

How do to promote my blog?

When it comes to promoting your blog you have several options. Paid promotions such as Facebook, Reddit, Google ads and free promotion on social media.

Here are some examples of how you can promote your content on social media for free:

  • Utilize Facebook groups to create a tribe of like minded followers.
  • Answer questions on Quora and present yourself as an authority in your niche.
  • Create YouTube videos to promote your content and reach people who are already searching for your topic.

In my opinion, the best way to get your content to active readers is to use free resources. Restructuring your thoughts on social media as more of a search engine is the key to succeeding. Not only is YouTube the biggest video site in the world, it is also the second biggest search engine, behind Google of course. Let this resonate with you for a second, people use Google for general information such as hours of operation and product information, whereas YouTube is used to learn how to do something. I have also found that it is a lot easier and faster to rank YouTube videos than it is websites. Just as long as you take the right steps to optimize your videos.

Paid advertising is a good avenue for promotion, but the people you are reaching are not viewing your content with the right intent. What I mean with the right intent is, they are not actively seeking the content you are looking for. If you can put your content in front of the right eyes at the right place, you can make money.

Should I make videos for my blog?

How can to make money blogging?

In this day in age people still believe that you have to work a nine-to-five job to make money from home. We have all seen YouTubers and bloggers that make a six-figure income, so how do you get in on that? Right off the bat, I’m going to say you won’t make a six-figure income, at least not at first. People who make that much money have the resources and business skills to make it happen. But you can still cash in on this making money from home craze, you’ll just need to work hard.

As I release new tutorials I will show you how to make more money at home, but for now, you will learn the basics.

Here’s what you need to make money blogging:

  • Profitable niche
  • Affiliate products, advertisements, or physical/virtual products
  • A steady flow of traffic

I’m not going to dive too deep into making money from blogging, but rather scratch the surface so that you can be prime your blog for success from the start.

Profitable Niche

It is possible to make money in almost any niche, but why settle for less? Do your research and see what affiliate offers are out there. More on that in a second.

Products or Ads?

This is one of the hardest questions to answer, what to do to make money? Let me just say that affiliate offers are the way to go. Many bloggers find that promoting affiliate offers see the best return on investment. If you have ads on your site you need thousands upon thousands of visitors to make the bare minimum. But with affiliate offers you can make a lot more money with less traffic.

Steady Flow of Traffic

The most important of all the above tips. If you don’t have traffic to your blog, how will you make money? Make sure to use the free promotion tips to start driving traffic to your site.

How do I put ads on my blog?

Placing ads on your blog is a very simple task, but it does require a little bit of know-how to add them to your site. Google AdSense is the number one resource when it comes to entry-level bloggers. Even expert bloggers use Google AdSense but some of them tend to use ad agencies that require a minimum of 200,000 visitors a month. To put ads on your blog the easiest way to do this would be to use an AdSense WordPress plugin which you can get for free in the WordPress Repository.

What are good affiliate programs to join?

Believe it or not, there are many affiliate programs or almost any niche. some of my favorite affiliate programs are Amazon affiliates and ClickBank. even if you do not find an affiliate offer within Amazon or ClickBank there are plenty of affiliate programs out there, especially for your niche. Simply go to Google type in your niche followed by an affiliate program. Trust me you will get results.
